SUAMICO (WLUK) — High school football teams opened practice for the upcoming season on Tuesday and one of those teams, Bay Port, to no surprise, has high expectations.

The Pirates were a Division 1 state semifinalist last season and while they are thinking big for the season, on Tuesday it was just about getting going.

“The first day coming out here, obviously we had contact days (two weeks ago), but now we’re trying to build up, (work on) fundamentals, (do ) mental reps,” senior Tevyn Montgomery said. “Obviously we don’t have the pads on so it’s a lot of pounding in information and just getting guys ready to go when we put the pads on. Just coming out here and setting a high expectations from day one.”

The Pirates were 12-1 last season with the lone loss ending the season, a Level 4 setback against eventual state champion Kimberly. The Pirates expect to be in the running again for a state championship game appearance for two reasons — talent and depth.
