WIAA Girls Basketball Tournament Begins This Week

FRCC Girls Basketball teams are split between Division 1 and 2.  Notre Dame Academy is coming off four straight trips to the State Championship game in Division 2 having won three of them before losing to Pewaukee in last year’s Championship game.  Two of the three Championships came against that same Pewaukee team.   The implementation of the WIAA success formula moved Notre Dame Academy up to Division 1 this year where they will make a push for a fifth straight State Tournament appearance.  Last year’s Division 2 State Champion Pewaukee also moves up to Division 1 this year and both Notre Dame Academy and Pewaukee will compete in the same Sectional.  Pewaukee is the #1 seed while Notre Dame Academy received the #7 seed.

De Pere, this year’s FRCC Champion, finished undefeated (18-0) in the Conference and ended Notre Dame’s three year reign as FRCC Champions.  The De Pere girls have some history of their own when it comes to State Tournament success.  The Redbirds finished as runner-ups in the State Tournament in 2010 and 2017 and they were State Champions in Division 1 in 2012.  De Pere received a #5 seed in this year’s tournament in arguably one of the toughest Sectionals in the State.  Six of the Top 10 teams in the State in the Wissports Coaches poll are in Sectional 2.  Pewaukee (1), Kimberly (3), Brookfield East (4), Hartford (5), De Pere (7) and Homestead (8).  Whoever represents Sectional 2 in the State Tournament will be well tested.

Bay Port, who finished the regular season with a win at Notre Dame Academy is hoping to make some noise and will host Germantown in the first round.  A win over Germantown and the Pirates would likely travel to Pewaukee for a Regional final match-up.  Manitowoc, Green Bay Preble and Sheboygan North are the other FRCC teams competing in Division 1.

In Division 2, the Highest ranked team is Ashwaubenon with a #4 seed.  Pulaski (6), Sheboygan South (10) and Green Bay Southwest (10) will also compete in Division 2.
